The Executive Board of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SASA) has requested today for the complex of the Belgrade Fair to be pronounced a cultural monument and the General Staff and Defense Ministry complex to be categorized so that it has the status of a cultural good of extreme importance for Serbia.

The announcement says that the announced demolition and the radical changes of the purpose of the complex of the Belgrade Fair and the complex of the General Staff and Defense Ministry would amount to an irreparable loss of an extremely valuable and important part of the cultural identity of Belgrade.

The SASA appeals for a new decision to be adopted, which contains and matches, in material terms, the initial solution of the Government of Serbia on pronouncing the Belgrade Fair complex a cultural monument, and which would determine the measures of protection for the halls 1, 2 and 3 with the entire access area, as well as for the entire area of the Belgrade Fair.

It has also requested for the Urban Detailed Regulation Plan to be prepared and adopted for the entire complex of the Belgrade Fair and, based on the elements of the Detailed Regulation Plan, for an international architectural-urban planning contest to be opened for the reconstruction, development and an improved design of the complex and the space of the Belgrade Fair.

As said in the announcement, it is also necessary for the General Staff and Defense Ministry complex to be categorized so that it has the status of a cultural good of extreme importance for Serbia, and, based on the determined measures of protection, for an international architectural-urban planning contest to be opened for the reconstruction, development and an improved design of the entire complex and the space of the General Staff and Defense Ministry building.

– The Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts believes that care for this complex is not just a matter of architecture, but also a matter of self-respect, ethical principles and norms – finally, a matter of the relation to one’s own history, because that is a point of special remembrance. Due to all of the above, it is necessary for that space to be adequately marked, with special care, remembrance and reverence – says the announcement.
