The project of the Trans-Balkans Electrical Energy Corridor, which connects Romania, through Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro, by an undersea cable with Italy, worth EUR 31 million in grants, has been presented at the company Elektromreza Srbije (EMS) in Belgrade.

The minister of mining and energy of Serbia, Dubravka Djedovic, said that EMS had managed to successfully realize a part of the project and that Serbia had already connected with Romania and that it would continue connecting with B&H and Montenegro.

– Our aim is to connect with the neighboring countries in order to be able to exchange as much electrical energy as possible, and even export, because we want to raise our production capacities. The Trans-Balkans Corridor project, in which we are helped by the EU, but also Germany and their development bank, with donations and favorable financial funds, aims for us to connect with B&H, Montenegro, but also with Romania and Italy – Djedovic said.

The Serbian section of the Trans-Balkans Corridor is 321 kilometers long and has four power line routes. Two have been completed, from the Romanian border to Pancevo and Kragujevac-Kraljevo.

The third and fourth routes, Bajina Basta-Obrenovac and Bajina Basta to the border with B&H and further to Montenegro, are being prepared. That power transfer system will replace the obsolete grid, reduce the number of malfunctions and lower the operating and maintenance costs.

The Trans-Balkans Corridor will be in function in 2027. The EU is already developing another power line system, closely connected with it, for the inclusion of electricity from renewable energy sources. The construction of that Central-Balkans Corridor, in which Serbia plays an important role, should start after 2030.
