The Government of Serbia, that is, the Ministry of Labor, Employment, Veteran and Social Policy, is in the process of signing agreements with Bangladesh, Vietnam and Guatemala which would facilitate the arrival of workers from these countries to Serbia, the Danas daily reported on Thursday.

As said, this was discussed at the meeting between ministries last week, when, among other things, the minister of foreign affairs asked the Ministry of Labor to provide a list of fields in which Serbia needed workforce. Bangladesh, with over 160 million residents, and Vietnam, with nearly 100 million, could be a constant source of workforce for Serbia, but the question is under which conditions.

What’s certain is that this is a good thing for employers. As Nebojsa Atanackovic of the Serbian Association of Employers explains, an increase in the offer in the labor market suits employers.

– If there are not enough people willing to work, it hurts the economy, but also raises the price of labor. Our economy cannot pay the amounts that are paid in the Western Europe. Our companies are not at the kind of technological level where they could be productive with expensive workforce – Atanackovic said.
