Serbia has deposited its agricultural plant seed material at the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, located at the archipelago in the Arctic Ocean, for the first time, announced the Embassy of Serbia in Norway.

– The depositing of twenty-six of our most important local varieties of wheat, barley, oat and rye, chosen by the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops from Novi Sad, will contribute to the global efforts to ensure the security of future generations in terms of food – the embassy says.

This unique vault keeps over a million seed samples from nearly all countries of the world.

The first storing of seed material from Serbia at Svalbard was realized through the international project led by the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops from Novi Sad and financed by the Benefit Sharing Fund and the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food – FAO.
