How to design a garden? This is the question that many have no answer to. This task will not be at all easy, but read the article, take what’s most important for you from it and get to work.

The garden and the yard are a very important part of each household. Make your stay in this place as pleasant as possible, depending on your desires and needs, advises Rasadnik Mihalek.

Make your yard a nice place to relax at, as well as a place where you can hang out with your friends in fresh air. A well-arranged garden and a neatly trimmed lawn should be part of every home. It is generally believed that these jobs are almost always done by women, but that’s not always the case. You will see very often that the garden and the flowers are fully cared for by men.

The space where you want to rest and relax should be arranged in the style that suits your taste. Surround yourself with colors that you find pleasant and the things you like. It is only in this way that you will be able to afford quality rest and relaxation every day.

How to make a plan for the yard?

First, make a list of what you want to have in your yard. Should your children have a place to play at? Do you want to grow vegetables? Where will you set up the garden furniture? Make a rough draft of what you want to put where. It will be a preliminary plan that you will realize step by step. Don’t rush, as rushing most frequently leads to mistakes that are hard to fix later on (additional work is necessary, but also additional costs).

Each yard needs one or more focal points. In other words, it needs a central figure that the yard will develop around. It can be a well arranged fountain, an artificial lake, a stone field, an elevated flower lane, a nice sculpture or a tall concrete planter with an interesting plant (see the image)…

If you can, make sure to include a water element (a fountain, a lake) in your plan, because water surfaces give a special kind of energy to a yard, bringing peace and harmony between man and nature.

Shaping small gardens

Small gardens are usually difficult to shape. There’s little room and the garden starts looking crowded if the plants are not combined well. Here’s one plan, or an idea, for how to arrange a small garden. Leave the middle for a lawn, and sow the plants along the walls and the fence.

Here, each plant and each element must have a set place. Many decide to plant grass on a small area and border it with short perennial plants and short shrubbery. This has an opposite effect, because there is not a single point that the view focuses on. We will visually enlarge a small garden if we make it tall. A tall tree needs to be planted (but narrow, not a tree with a wide top) and it is necessary to make a pergola which will be covered with creepers. Make it at the yard’s end.

This way, you will create an illusion that behind the pergola is another yard area. Or, instead of a tree, set up a nice sculpture or a concrete fountain. Also, make use of optical illusions when arranging darker and lighter plants. Light plants of bright colors seem closer than they are. So, in smaller gardens, plant flowers and plants of darker colors, because that will make the yard look more spacious. The “LESS IS MORE” rule applies here. Don’t combine too many colors and kinds of plants, because you will create a chaos.

Shaping large gardens

In large gardens, there are numerous possibilities. If the garden is too big and appears monotonous to the eye, we can make it look smaller. Make various obstacles such as hedges, groups of trees or shrubbery… Separate each unit and thereby get smaller groups of plants which appear harmonized. You must take care not to overdo it when it comes to the density of the planting. The garden needs to “breathe”.

Individual borders made of perennial plants or shrubbery can act as borders between those units. That way, you can create interesting parts and make each corner have its own charm. If you want a formal garden, you can delineate certain parts with arranged, clean-lined hedges.

Today, we are talking in general about any type of garden, but each yard is a story unto itself and we all have different tastes when it comes to exterior design, love different plant, different colors.
