After the Government of Serbia recently accepted the initiative of the Ministry of Economy for the construction of the BIO4 Campus, the first steps toward the realization of Phase A of the future complex, which will encompass the defining of the preliminary design and the construction of two institutes and a technology park, have been taken.

The Office for Public Investment Management has opened the contest for the design of the preliminary urban-architectural solutions for Phase A of the BIO4 Campus, a complex of higher education institutions with complementary features.

According to the contest documentation, in this phase, the solution for the construction of the Faculty of Biology, the Faculty of Pharmacy, the Institute Unit I, the Institute Unit II and the Science-Technology Park II, will be designed.

Within the building of the Faculty of Biology, in addition to the rooms for the courses, the accommodation of the professors and the administrative staff, what’s also to be built are the center for electronic microscopy, the center for forensic and applied molecular genetics and the Vivarium. A special note has been given to the future designers for these rooms to be designed so as to separate the “clean part” from the “dirty part”, due to the complex experiments that are done here. As for the center for electronic microscopy within the Faculty of Biology, the recommendation is for this center’s premises to be located in the basement, far from the streets, because the devices used for research are sensitive to vibrations.

The new building of the Faculty of Pharmacy will be built on an area of around 21,014 m2, with rooms meant for the courses, office space for professors and associate professors, administration, laboratories and a vivarium for the keeping of experimental animals.

A special segment of the future building of this higher education institution will be the construction of laboratories which need to have a storage space for flammable and non-flammable materials. The plan is to design rooms for research labs for biomedical research, chemical research, pharmaceutical, technological and cosmetology research. In addition to these research labs, commercial-purpose labs are to be built as well – a laboratory for the testing and control of medicines, a laboratory for microbiological research and a laboratory for medical-biochemical analyses.

In addition to the designing of higher education institutions, Phase A of the construction of the BIO4 Campus will also encompass the construction of two complexes where institutes will be located.

The first complex will be built on a total area of 12,500 m2, where the Institute for Molecular Genetics and Genetic Engineering and a BSL 3 lab (level 3 of biological security) will be located. Also, this complex will feature the Research-Development Institute for Artificial Intelligence of Serbia.

The second complex of the institute will be located on an area of 17,000 m2 and feature 4 science institutions – the Institute for Medical Research of the University of Belgrade, the Institute for Multidisciplinary Research, the Center for Sustainable Management of Bioresources and Natural Products PANDA and the Institute for Biological Research “Sinisa Stankovic”. The complex should also feature rooms for the accommodation of other science institutes.

Finally, this initial phase will encompass the designing of a building for the accommodation of the Biotechnical Building of the Science-Technology Park in Belgrade. The facility will have four floors (including the ground floor), with two functional units. The first unit will feature a space for the development of innovations with the majority focus on startup companies in biology, biotechnology and bioinformatics. The second functional unit will feature the Center for Ideas, which will function as a zone of gathering of researchers and students from various fields.

The value of the job of the preparation of the urban-architectural design is RSD 50,000,000, whereas the deadline for the application of those interested is December 6.
