Serbia and Hungary will build three railroads together, that is, in addition to the Belgrade-Budapest fast railroad, they will also build the Subotica-Szeged railroad and the Subotica-Baja railroad, stated the minister of construction, transport and infrastructure of Serbia, Goran Vesic.

Vesic told the press in Budapest, following the meeting with the Hungarian minister of construction and transport, Lazar Janos, that, in addition to the railroad from Subotica to Szeged, which would open to passenger traffic in October, the railroad from Subotica to Baja would be built together.

– We have already completed the preliminary design for the Subotica-Baja railroad together with the Hungarians, our part is around 13 kilometers long and worth around 50 million and we will apply that project together. They have a slightly longer part of the railroad. So, we are ready to start designing and building the railroad together, after the preliminary design. That is our third railroad – said Vesic, as announced on the website of the minister.

As he said, a large number of citizens gravitates toward that area and it remains to be seen whether the railroad to Baja is to be financed with the help of the EU or from the budget.

Janos told the press that Serbia was a very important partner for Hungary.

– To the end of successful cooperation, we have agreed to build three large border crossings, near Backi Breg, Kelebija, and to further develop the crossing near Horgos, and to do concrete projects and present them at the joint government session – Janos says.

He also says that he and Vesic have agreed to connect fast routes and highways in both countries through new border crossings.

– Then, in railroad traffic, to continue cooperation on the Belgrade-Budapest fast railroad and on the Subotica-Szeged, Subotica-Baja stretch – he said and added that there would be increased efforts toward the utilization of the Danube as a navigable waterway between the two countries.

Janos said that, in October, the Hungarian section of the Subotica-Szeged railroad would be completed as well, but that it would open to cargo traffic only in late 2024 or early 2025.

– The most problematic point is the crossing itself, that is, the border. On that railroad, trains should run at up to 120km/h, but the aim is for them to run at 160 km/h between Subotica and Szeged and Subotica and Baja. The Subotica-Szeged railroad makes sense only if 40 km can be traveled in under 40 minutes. On the other hand, the Belgrade-Budapest railroad is designed for speeds of up to 200 km/h – he said.

He says that Vesic advocates for that speed to be in effect all the way to Presevo.
